It's Organ Harvesting Time!
It's a battle for the bluegrass as Newport, Kentucky's Riverside Rollergirls battle Louisville, Kentucky's Derby City Rollergirls in Riverside's first ever interleague match. Can Riverside's Jailhouse Rock-Its hold their own against The Derby City All-Stars? Come see for yourself on October 27th!
What is Roller Derby?
Roller derby is a fast-paced, blink-and-you’ll-miss it sport that pits two teams of 5 skaters against one another in what is essentially a race around a track, with other skaters as obstacles. Each team consists of 3 blockers, 1 pivot (who can be identified by a solid stripe on her helmet), and 1 jammer (who can be identified by a star on her helmet). The jammer is the only member of a team that can score points. On the first whistle, the pack (blockers and pivots from both teams) takes off. On the second whistle, the jammers take off, skating as fast as they can around the track, being helped by their teammates, who create holes for their jammer by knocking their opposition out of the way, while at the same time trying to hinder the progress of the other jammer. Points are scored when a jammer passes a member of the opposing team. The team with the most points at the end of 3 periods wins.
Who are the Jailhouse Rock-Its?
The Jailhouse Rock-Its are the cream of the Riverside crop. The best members of both intraleague teams join forces to battle against other leagues as their All-Star Team, the Jailhouse Rock-Its.
Who are the Riverside Rollergirls?
Riverside Rollergirls is a non-profit collectively owned and operated roller derby league based in Newport, Kentucky. It was founded in November 2006. They operate with a skater-owned, skater-run spirit with all members sharing equal ownership of the league, using a democratic decision-making model called consensus.
